CERCIL - Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Lima is a private, nonprofit organization working since 1967. Its main objective is the comprehensive rehabilitation of people with visual impairment (young adults and adults). CERCIL has a team of professionals with broad experience, aiming at the inclusion of this population in their community, school and work.A men sitting in front of a indigenous woman, a microscope between them© CBM

CBR is a rehabilitation strategy, which works using all the resources of the community to ensure accessibility and inclusion of people with disability and their families with equal opportunities.

The CBR programme is currently working in 3 neighborhoods of the district of Pachacutec: San Juan de Lurigancho, Huaycán and Ventanilla), where three community centers have been implemented. These include a strong component of self help groups, in addition to the rehabilitation process. Pachacutec is the poorest district among the nine which belong to the Constitutional Callao Province.

This CBR programme includes eye screening and cataract detection campaigns in coordination with other institutions specialized in eye health care (among them other CBM partners).

In addition, since 2011 a low vision service is being offered in CERCIL’s facilities, thanks to a strategic alliance with “Vision sin Fronteras ” (also a CBM partner). This service has covered an existing need of the visually impaired population in Lima in this important area and it also includes psychological treatment and access to assistive devices.
